What are the applications for IRONOR® micaceous iron oxide?
IRONOR® is primarily used in anti-corrosion paints for metal substrates.
It can be used in other fields where haematite is employed, such as welding electrodes.
IRONOR® has been used for over 120 years in the formulation of anti-corrosion coatings to improve the durability of the paint. The applications in which this type of paint is used are mainly in hostile environments, industrial paints and marine paints.
The finest example is the Eiffel Tower, which is coated with an anti-corrosion paint based on micaceous iron oxide, ensuring the paint’s durability for many years. Micaceous iron oxide is used in anti-corrosion coatings on metal surfaces: electricity pylons, oil rigs, metal bridges, tanks, pipelines, etc.
What are the properties of IRONOR® micaceous iron oxide?
Thanks to its lamellar structure, IRONOR® enhances the coating’s anti-corrosion performance:
- it forms a barrier against corrosion: the fine flakes align parallel to the substrate to provide protection, reduce external damage and prevent the ingress of moisture and sea salts. It blocks UV rays
- It has a high aspect ratio due to its significant lamellar structure.
- Its high lamellarity acts as a barrier against infiltration into the paint
- IRONOR® has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as iron, thereby reducing film sagging and cracking
